FIRPO & PATRICIA SMITH
Gerald David "Firpo" Smith (1927-1985) and Patricia Lucille Moore Smith (1930-2012) were both lifelong Fort Scott residents. Their families had moved to Bourbon County in about 1886 and 1860, respectively. Patricia's grandfather J.B. Moore and later her father "Pat" Moore operated J.B. Moore & Sons Grocery at 1004 S. Main for nearly 50 years, across the street from the original Fort Scott Junior College and Fort Scott High School. Patricia's family lived in an apartment upstairs from the grocery store and she attended FSJC for a time. Firpo was a World War II Navy veteran, taking part in several major operations in the Western Pacific 1944-1945 as U.S. forces moved towards Japan. After Firpo and Patricia married in 1948, Firpo worked for several local businesses before starting with the Gas Service Company where he worked for 20-plus years and he was also active in several civic organizations. Patricia worked at the Western Insurance Company which got its start and had its home office in Fort Scott where at one time it employed nearly 800 people in professional white-collar jobs. Patricia would work at the Western (and later at American States Insurance and Safeco) for nearly 50 years in their Fort Scott offices downtown and later on south Horton Street. Firpo and Patricia’s son Charles is a former FSCC full scholarship recipient, graduated Pittsburg State, and obtained an MBA degree from the University of Southern California. Another son David Arnold Smith died as a baby.
